Trail Notes April 21

Week two of the school holidays means less time in the studio (actually NO time) and more time doing things with my family. Taking a break from painting is possibly a good thing, I’m sure I will return to it refreshed. There has been very little actual art focus for me over the Easter long weekend as it was full of family activities however I did manage to get to the Art Gallery of NSW once.

I recieved the news this week that my artwork entered into the Gallipoli Art Prize was not a finalist. I wasn’t expecting to get in as only a few works out of a few hundred are chosen but I’m glad I had a go. I picked up my painting while in the city on Wednesday.

I took this photo outside the NSW Contemporary art gallery, there is a matching one on the roof of the Art Gallery of NSW and these are part of the biennale of Sydney.

At the Art Gallery of NSW I had time to look downstairs at an exhibition that is currently on for an artist I have never heard of, Sol Lewitt:

His work was contemporary, brightly coloured and full of geometric shapes. His work is a long way from my style but I think its important to look at a wide variety of styles.

The only other art related thing I did this week was by chance. I went to my local Crazy Clarks with the girls to see if they had any Easter Eggs and discovered they were closing down. Everything was 30-50% off so I headed for their cheap canvas isle to see what was left. I am aiming to use higher quality canvas in my work but I don’t mind these for some things (I have a stash of higher quality for art prizes etc). Here’s my little cheap stash:

So that was it along the trail this week. Not too much but that’s ok, I will make up for it after the holidays are finished.
